Arne Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Support After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was natural for questions to be asked about his future following another heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 matches, representing the club's worst run after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got significant backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It's important to change things and secure a win of course but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I accept my position. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Talks with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to expand on his dialogues with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me every single minute of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “Through standard discussions I sense the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them after this match so far so let’s see.”
Recurring Problems and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over familiar failings from his team in their Champions League loss, specifically wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his view of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder remarked.
“It’s just not good enough. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side going through a spell of this nature with performances so bad.”
Jones concluded, “But we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And as long as it is removed, we will always battle.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to the top, demonstrate to all once more what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
