Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
