Dracula Film Analysis – Luc Besson’s Passionate Reinterpretation of the Gothic Classic is Outlandish but Watchable

Maybe audiences aren’t clamoring for a fresh take of Dracula from Luc Besson, the celebrated French director for polished extravagance. Still, one must admit: his lavishly upholstered romantic vampire tale has ambition and panache – and with its B-movie charm, I’m not sure I wouldn’t prefer compared with the recent, stately interpretation by Robert Eggers of Nosferatu. A few strange elements appear, like a particular moment that looks like it presents a geographic divide between France and Romania.

Christoph Waltz as a Clever but Weary Clergyman Hunting Vampires

Christoph Waltz portrays a clever but beleaguered vampire-hunting priest – it’s surprising he never took on such a part earlier – who arrives in Paris in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Likewise present is the evil Count Dracula, brought to life by the seasoned horror actor Caleb Landry Jones speaking in a twisted regional dialect reminiscent of Steve Carell’s Gru from the Despicable Me comedies. This character suits him perfectly.

The Plot: A Saga of Heartbreak

Here’s the premise: the count has been restlessly roaming the globe in torment over four centuries after his transformation into a vampire, a punishment for his faithless sorrow following the loss of his spouse Elisabeta (an inaugural screen appearance for Zoë Bleu, daughter of Rosanna Arquette). Dracula has looked tirelessly for a lady who might be the return of his lost love. As ill fortune would have it, the fortunate female turns out to be Mina (also Bleu, of course), the modest betrothed of the count’s timid estate manager, Jonathan Harker (Ewens Abid), who just traveled to the count’s castle to discuss his real estate holdings and the tiny painting of the winsome Mina drew the vampire’s attention.

Besson’s Handling and Comic Flair

Besson structures Dracula’s second-act backstory of international journeys in various outrageous costumes confidently, and he willingly includes offering funny bits reminiscent of Mel Brooks – like Dracula’s ongoing failed efforts to end his own life after Elisabeta’s death, along with absurd moments that follow Dracula sprays himself with a specific fragrance during the 1700s in Florence, which causes him to be unavoidably attractive to females. Outlandish but entertaining.

Dracula is available digitally starting December 1st and on DVD and Blu-ray from 22 December. It will be shown in Australian cinemas beginning on the fifth of February, 2026.
