England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they achieve the anticipated entry for a competition hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the national team for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The team are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s ground.

Competition Launch and Protest

The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were barracked as they arrived the venue by around fifty activists, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from global football because of the situation in Gaza.

Signs were raised with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The first match of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will include Wales if they qualify.

The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help engage a wider spectrum of viewers.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Locations and Knockout Stage

Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a host city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“It will be a championship for the followers and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and capacity to bring people together.”

Over 3 million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to supporters.
