Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
