Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism
Figures from across the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,â said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the statements.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, thereâs a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
