The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
