The Mayor-Elect states he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
