The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
