Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
