The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.
